2007 Introduction to Track Bike Racing

This 8-week introductory track bike racing program for students in grades seven through twelve is for those who would like to experience the thrill of high-speed cycling on an Olympic-style velodrome. Riding and racing on the Velodrome is not only extremely exciting, but is done without the need to ride in the street. Plus all the race action can be viewed from the grandstand.

Training in the basic concepts of velodrome riding will be covered in weeks 1–3 including track racing rules, bike fit, bike handling, racing tactics and the fundamentals of safely controlling a track bike, with no brakes, no gears and no capacity to coast. Weeks 4-5 will advance to team and group riding, race strategies and race simulations. Weeks 6–8 will wrap up with competitive racing. Come learn about and participate in the fastest form of bicycle racing on the same velodrome where top US cyclists were groomed including: Tour de France rider Christian VandeVelde, 1996 Olympic Team member Bill Clay and former US Postal Service team member Robbie Ventura.

This program will make you feel confident enough to continue racing throughout the summer on Thursday nights. Each participant will have two days a week of instruction. Track bikes will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. Riders must provide their own CPSC approved helmet and proper cycling clothes and shoes.

The lead instructor is USA Cycling Category 1 Coach Steve Thordarson. Please note: Fridays will be make-up days if needed.
